What do I need to do if I want to take my adopted dog to Great Britain?

When you  adopt your dog it will have received vaccinations against rabies, parvovirus, leptospirosis and hepatitis. These need to be repeated every year and you cannot enter Great Britain without your dog having an up to date rabies vaccination. Three weeks must have elapsed following the vaccination if it is their first rabies vaccination.

Your dog will also have been microchipped and have a passport which is valid to enter the UK.

You will need to make a veterinary appointment no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (5 days) before you enter the UK, during which your vet will check that your dog is healthy to travel and administer a tapeworm treatment tablet. The health and tablet administration both need to be entered into your dog´s passport by the vet with the tablet being entered in the Echinococcus Treatment section.

Please note that you are not allowed to enter the UK with more than five dogs, cats or ferrets unless it is for a competition where special rules apply.

We refer you to the British Government´s website where there is a comprehensive explanation of the procedure required by you.
